在吴天宇的六十大寿宴上，他邀请了众多贵客以示退休。整个场面由他的长子吴雷和市计委主任简兰芳精心策划和组织。吴雷是城里数一数二的私营企业家，而简兰芳是吴天宇一手培养起来的官员，享有很高的声望。吴天宇的寿宴吸引了众多来贺的客人，其中包括他的次子吴刚，一名市局刑侦科的刑警，以及幼子吴雨，从事软件开发的年轻人。当天，吴雨玩弄家里的电脑摄像头，把整个庆生宴会的场面录入电脑硬盘。 家里的保姆王燕在寿宴中周到地照料着客人，她的举止得体大方，已经在吴家工作了八年。她从一个乡下姑娘逐渐成长为标准的城市女性，甚至比大多数城里女人都更加得体。吴刚和吴雨都对王燕有特殊的感情，但王燕明白主仆关系，不轻易越界。唯独吴雷对王燕不屑一顾。寿宴接近尾声时，一个名叫刀子的人，曾与王燕有过不愉快的经历，并因此入狱。刀子的世界似乎只有王燕，入狱后也一直思念着她。但王燕已经淡忘了刀子，不愿再...。当年一起在内蒙插队的哥们儿，陆陆续续地返了城，只有他们的大哥肖志成留在了内蒙草原，一直到退休才返回了他阔别三十几年的城里…… 回到城里的肖志成发现当年的生死之交，在这些年的城市生活中，过得都很辛苦，当官的有当官的难处，小老百姓有小老百姓的辛酸……。SYNOPSIS Urgently called, the police inspector has arrived in a hotel, and didn't find any crime, but noticed some strangenesses occurring there. (Strugatsky Brothers website) NOTES This is a crime / mystery thriller with surreal and psychedelic science fiction overtones based on a book Inspector Glebsky's Puzzle by the Strugatsky brothers. The screenplay was also written by the brothers and it differs from the book. The less you know about the movie the better starting point you have. The film is based largely on the mystery of what's happening to the people of Dead Mountaineer's Hotel. Is everything what it seems? Who's dead or who's not?。
